The gaming world is still reeling from Sony’s recent bombshell announcement outlining a strategic roadmap to completely phase out physical PlayStation discs by 2028. Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden lent his veteran perspective to the fiery debate over media preservation, offering an insider look at why the industry is moving so ruthlessly toward an all-digital landscape.
Speaking on the industry shift, Layden confessed that seeing physical boxes vanish makes him “kind of sad as a fan who grew up with shelves of games.” However, he urged players to understand the reality behind the curtain, noting that massive, cold financial analysis always dictates these platform pivots.
According to retail data, digital downloads now account for greater than 85% of total software sales on modern consoles. For platform holders like Sony, eliminating the physical supply chain—including manufacturing, shipping, disc-drive hardware costs, and retail store cuts—saves hundreds of millions annually. While the community fears losing true game ownership, Layden’s comments suggest that corporate leadership views the death of physical media as an inevitable evolution rather than a choice.
