Microsoft has launched a major expansion of its game preservation efforts, officially bringing Xbox Backward Compatibility to PC and Windows handhelds.
Led by Xbox VP of Next Generation Jason Ronald, the initiative kicks off in early release with four landmark Original Xbox titles—marking the first time these classic console releases have been officially playable natively on PC hardware and handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally.
The Launch Lineup
The initial wave focuses on iconic OG Xbox favorites:
- Conker: Live & Reloaded – Rare’s notorious, uncensored (and visually ahead of its time) 2005 remake.
- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge – The beloved 1930s alternate-history arcade dogfighter.
- BLiNX: The Time Sweeper – Artoon’s time-manipulating mascot platformer.
- Fuzion Frenzy – The legendary 4-player party game that defined early Xbox LAN nights.
Key Features & How Cross-Ownership Works
Microsoft isn’t just dropping basic ROM ports onto the Xbox app; the PC releases come packed with modern platform upgrades:
- Xbox Play Anywhere & Digital Transfer: If you already own digital console licenses for these titles, they automatically carry over to PC and handhelds at no extra charge.
- Game Pass Inclusion: All four titles are available across all tiers of Xbox Game Pass for subscribers.
- PC Graphic Enhancements: Features up to 4x resolution upscaling (up to 2560×1920 in native 4:3 aspect ratio), VSync support, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, and windowed/fullscreen options.
- Achievements Coming Soon: While not active on day one, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox Achievements will be patched into all four titles later this year.
