Microsoft and Xbox have officially unveiled a new feature that allows players to convert physical Xbox game discs into digital entitlements. Announced by Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald and CEO Asha Sharma, the feature gives physical disc owners access to digital perks—including disc-free play, PC cross-ownership via Xbox Play Anywhere, and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
The initiative begins rolling out to Xbox Insiders on Monday, August 31, 2026, ahead of a wider public deployment.

How the Conversion Process Works
The system is designed to seamlessly integrate existing physical disc libraries into modern digital ecosystems without eliminating traditional physical disc functionality.
- Simple Claiming: Inserting a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into a console and launching the title prompts the user to claim a digital entitlement.
- Disc-Free Convenience: Once claimed, the game can be launched and played without keeping the physical disc in the drive.
- Platform Perks: Unlocks digital features tied to the title, including PC access via Xbox Play Anywhere and remote streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming on handhelds, mobile devices, or secondary PCs.
- Single Revocable License: To prevent duplicate licensing, the digital entitlement is tethered directly to the disc’s unique identifier. If a player sells or lends the physical disc to another user, inserting the disc into a new console transfers the digital license to the new owner, revoking it from the previous holder.
Supported Titles and Rollout Schedule
Xbox confirmed that thousands of physical titles will support the program at launch, with additional games added over time.
- Initial Scope: Focuses primarily on physical releases across Xbox One and Xbox Series X generations.
- Legacy Platforms: Original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not supported at launch due to lack of modern disc-level unique identifier tracking.
- Insider Testing Window: Begins August 31, 2026, for active Xbox Insider preview rings prior to full ecosystem integration.
