Following its initial title reveal earlier this summer, Square Enix closed out the September 3 PlayStation State of Play showcase with a massive ten-minute gameplay deep dive for Final Fantasy VII Revelation.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Producer Yoshinori Kitase confirmed that the third and final entry in the remake saga will launch worldwide on April 8, 2027, arriving simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).
Seamless Airship Traversal and Open-World Exploration
The showcase highlighted how Square Enix expanded the world map traversal mechanics beyond Rebirth‘s regional zones, building a single interconnected planet.
- Highwind Airship Controls: Players gain direct manual control over the Highwind airship to fly across the entire world map without loading screens.
- Skydiving Mechanics: For the first time in the trilogy, players can leap out of the Highwind in mid-flight and skydive directly into open-world regions or hidden sub-locations below.
- Underwater Exploration: Demonstrates real-time submarine controls, allowing Cloud and the party to dive below the ocean surface to navigate underwater trenches and locate sunken Shinra research facilities.
New Combat Systems and Story Arc
- FITS Mechanics: Introduces the Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear system. Outfitting party members with special gear alters their visual style while unlocking class-specific abilities inspired by classic Final Fantasy jobs (such as Warrior, Time Mage, and Black Mage).
- The WEAPON Threat: The story picks up immediately from the conclusion of Rebirth, focusing on the party’s journey to the Northern Crater while giant planet-defending WEAPON monsters emerge to cause global destruction.
- Story Expansion Pass: Square Enix announced a digital expansion pass featuring two post-launch story chapters focusing on Sephiroth’s past alongside Vincent and The Turks.
