Nintendo deployed Version 4.0.0 for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, bringing dedicated performance upgrades and feature additions for Nintendo Switch 2 hardware alongside balance updates across all platforms.

Nintendo Switch 2 Specific Upgrades

When running on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, Version 4.0.0 unlocks performance and hardware-specific additions:

  • 5–8 Player Local Split-Screen: Expands local couch multiplayer from 4 to up to 8 players on a single console. Up to seven legacy Joy-Con or Switch Pro controllers can connect, though at least one Joy-Con 2 or Switch 2 Pro Controller is required to initiate an 8-player lobby.
  • Enhanced Visuals & Display Output: Adds native high-resolution output for the Nintendo Switch 2 built-in display and connected 4K displays.
  • Fast Loading Times: Reduces asset streaming and load times prior to races and battle modes.
  • CameraPlay Integration: Adds USB webcam support for local and online multiplayer. During online GameChat sessions, player video feeds render alongside the race HUD.

General Gameplay & Balance Adjustments

Version 4.0.0 introduces universal adjustments affecting all versions of the game:

  • Base Movement Speed Buff: Global kart acceleration and speed have been increased across all engine classes by the equivalent of holding 1 Coin.
  • Boo Item Buff: Using a Boo item to turn invisible no longer slows down the driver when traveling off-road.
  • 96 Race VS Ruleset: Players owning the Booster Course Pass DLC can now configure custom “VS Race” tournaments to run a full 96-race marquee grand prix.
